Earlier this year, on behalf of concerned local residents, I sponsored a petition to the Queensland Parliament, highlighting the insufficient protections for local wildlife and a number of other issues along the State Government controlled road, Mt Crosby Road.
Thanks to my advocacy and the community support received for this petition, the Palaszczuk State Labor Government committed to undertake an evaluation of existing wildlife signage along this road, as well as to conduct an assessment of wildlife movements in the local area.
However, disappointingly, there is still no definitive timeline by the State Labor Government on when any meaningful action will be taken to enhance local wildlife protection along Mt Crosby Road.
More recently, local residents have further encountered distressing scenes along Mt Crosby Road of injured and maimed wildlife, including Koalas, due to the instillation of additional plating on guardrails, which is inhibiting safe animal crossings.
I want to encourage all local residents, especially road users of Mt Crosby Road, to provide any feedback or information they may have regarding local wildlife movements and safety in the area, to please report this to metropolitanregion@tmr.qld.gov.au so that this information can be captured and acted upon by the State Labor Government. .
I call on the Labor Minister for Transport and Main Roads, and the Palaszczuk State Labor Government, to address this vital wildlife safety issue as a matter of priority, in order to protect and conserve our precious native fauna.
