Labor Can’t be Trusted on Education.
Education targets have been dumped, teachers can’t be replaced and hundreds of schools remain asbestos-riddled, as the fallout from Treasurer Cameron Dick’s budget sends shockwaves across Queensland’s education sector.
The Palaszczuk-Miles Labor Government has axed education targets and outcomes in this year’s budget to hide the truth about their failures.
Shadow Education Minister Dr Christian Rowan said the previous two Budgets had revealed missed targets in reading, writing and numeracy across all year levels.
“This year Labor dumped targets and outcomes to hide how bad things have become on their watch,” Dr Rowan said.
“You can’t fix what you don’t measure and this week’s budget has let down students, teachers and families by dumping transparency and accountability.
“Cameron Dick’s budget was only focused on the next four months before the next election and not the next four years and beyond.
“Labor has failed to deliver the extra 6,190 teachers and 1,139 teacher aides, they promised at the last election, with numbers up just 0.79% in the past year.
“Labor can’t be trusted on education.
“Labor’s teacher workforce crisis has impacted literacy and numeracy outcomes across Queensland.
“Project delays have crippled school buildings and classrooms across the state.
“There is asbestos material in hundreds of schools, old building and bathroom facilities throughout state schools in Queensland that desperately need refurbishment works, yet $87 million set aside for works last year wasn’t even spent.
“Many schools are in complete disarray because of Labor’s chaos and crisis.
“This government has bizarrely told Queenslanders not to judge them on their record, and that their past failures don’t matter.
“They do. Queensland students and teachers are paying a high price for Labor’s failures.
“Labor will say and do anything to cling to power.
“Only the LNP has the right priorities for Queensland’s future including lifting education standards and boosting student-to-teacher ratios in schools.”
