Western Suburbs Residents Get Ready for Queensland’s Storm & Bushfire Season:

Monday, 30 September 2019

With Summer fast approaching, and after a horrific start to Queensland’s bushfire season, on Saturday the 28th of September the Brookfield Rural Fire Brigade pulled up its roller-doors and hosted a special Open Day for the local community.

Speaking at the Open Day, Dr Christian Rowan MP, the State Member for Moggill told residents that now is the time to Get Ready, and to prepare as best as possible for Queensland’s notoriously unpredictable weather events.

“Last month’s multiple, devastating fires across Queensland is a fresh reminder and wake up call to consider our own preparedness as we head into Summer.

“There are plenty of simple steps you can take right now which will go a long way should severe weather events strike; including preparing your own home by checking the condition of your roof and cleaning out gutters and downpipes, trimming trees and overhanging branches, and securing loose items that may cause damage if blown away by high winds.” Dr Rowan said.

Mr Michael Gordon, the Second Officer of the Brookfield Rural Fire Brigade, urged residents to develop or update their own bushfire plan.

“Really be prepared, have a bushfire plan in place, and plan your emergency kit. It’s easy to do and all the information you need can be found online at getready.qld.gov.au.” Mr Gordon said.

Prior to the Open Day, Dr Rowan took another inspection of the deteriorating conditions and bushfire risks in the Moggill electorate, particularly the D’Aguilar National Park and Lake Manchester Region.

“After seeing first-hand the drying conditions and increasing fuel load in our local area, I’ve written to the Labor Minister for Fire and Emergency Services to raise a number of matters in relation to these bushfire hazards and the Government’s risk-mitigation strategies.

“I also took the opportunity to raise the importance of additional resources for our rural fire brigades, as well as the possibility of establishing a new rural fire service for the Anstead, Mount Crosby, or Lake Manchester Area, and I look forward to the Minister’s response.

“Our community owes so much to the incredible efforts of our emergency services volunteers, including at our rural fire brigades, and again I’d like to thank everyone involved not just at the recent Open Day, but for their work year-round in ensuring our communities are safe and prepared.”  Dr Rowan said.
